An Affordable Addiction, 2023
Description :
An Affordable Addiction reflects on everyday rituals of consumption through the parallel cultures of coffee in the United States and chai in India. A coffee cup and a teacup are divided and brought together to complete a single circular form, suggesting how different cultural habits can emerge from the same human desire for comfort, stimulation, and routine. The textured exterior recalls bubble wrap, another ordinary object associated with the repetitive satisfaction of popping one bubble after another. By connecting these compulsive gestures, the work uses humor to examine how seemingly harmless pleasures can become dependencies. The title points to the accessibility of these small addictions, questioning when an everyday source of comfort quietly becomes something we feel unable to do without.
