Man-Goes, 2023
Description :
Man-goes transforms a mango, a fruit associated with childhood pleasure and desire, into a meditation on maturity, restraint, and changing priorities. The work emerged from the realization that something deeply enjoyed could also carry consequences for my health, forcing pleasure to be negotiated through conscious choice. A measuring tape runs across the mango like a new system of control, suggesting the calculation, limitation, and self-discipline that enter our lives as circumstances change. The title plays on “mangoes” and “man goes,” pointing toward the passage of time and the inevitability of change. In dialogue with The Dilemma, the work reflects on growing older as a process in which desire does not disappear, but our relationship to it must evolve.
