A Unified Knot I, 2024

Description :

A Unified Knot I merges two culturally gendered forms into a single continuous object: the bow tie, conventionally associated with masculine dress, and a long braided hairstyle associated with femininity. Rather than placing the two symbols in opposition, the sculpture physically binds them together, allowing one identity to flow into the other.

The knot becomes the conceptual center of the work. It functions simultaneously as connection, tension, and interdependence, suggesting that identities often understood through fixed binaries are more entangled than separate. Cast in brass, the soft and flexible qualities of fabric and hair become permanent, giving physical weight to gestures normally associated with appearance and social presentation. A Unified Knot reflects on gendered codes of dress and beauty while proposing identity as something constructed through connection rather than division.
