A Land Bug, 2024

Description :

A Land Bug translates the earlier graphite drawing into sculpture, transforming the human brain into the body of a bed bug. The work begins with the behavior of a parasite that enters spaces of comfort, feeds when its host is vulnerable, and quietly disrupts a sense of security. Here, that behavior becomes a metaphor for people and forces that operate similarly within social life, consuming attention, energy, and progress while creating persistent discomfort.

By replacing the insect’s body with a brain, the sculpture shifts the threat from the purely physical to the psychological and social. The hybrid form suggests that some of the most persistent obstacles we encounter are intelligent, calculated, and difficult to remove. Cast in brass, the temporary nuisance of a bug becomes durable and strangely precious, creating tension between attraction and repulsion. A Land Bug uses humor and unease to examine the disruptive forces that inhabit the very environments in which we expect support, stability, and growth.
