The Contemporary Charmer IV continues the series’ transformation of the necktie into the body of a cobra, bringing together two recognizable symbols of power. The cobra evokes danger, seduction, and the traditional figure of the snake charmer, while the necktie signals professional authority, status, and institutional respectability. Their fusion suggests a contemporary form of charming in which influence operates not through music, but through language, appearance, negotiation, and persuasion. Cast in brass, the familiar softness of a tie becomes rigid and permanent, while the snake appears simultaneously controlled and capable of striking. The work uses humor and visual contradiction to question how power is performed, packaged, and exercised within contemporary professional and social structures.
