Contemporary Charmer V, 2024
Description:
Contemporary Charmer V transforms the necktie, a familiar symbol of professionalism, authority, and social status, into the body of a monumental multi-headed cobra. The work draws from the figure of the snake charmer, but reverses the familiar relationship: here, the symbols of professional power have themselves become the snakes.
By multiplying and entangling the ties, the installation reflects on systems in which appearance, persuasion, hierarchy, and influence become forms of contemporary “charm.” The necktie can signify respectability and success, yet when transformed into a threatening cobra, that same object suggests manipulation, competition, and concealed power. At an architectural scale, the familiar accessory becomes physically overwhelming, asking who is actually doing the charming, who is being charmed, and how easily authority can disguise itself through respectable appearances.
