Making Ends Meet, 2020
Information :
Making Ends Meet transforms an ordinary bar of soap into an enlarged sculptural form.Growing up in India, I watched my mother carefully manage our household expenses. She kept track of what was spent, what could be saved, and how long everyday resources could be made to last. Although I grew up around this practice of economic discipline, I did not fully understand its value until I moved to the United States and began living independently.
Soap is consumed gradually through everyday use, becoming smaller until almost nothing remains. For me, this process became a metaphor for budgeting: stretching limited resources, minimizing waste, and constantly negotiating between necessity and consumption. The work reflects how a habit I once observed in my mother became part of my own way of surviving and adapting to a different economic and cultural environment. What began as a domestic lesson ultimately became an inherited strategy for independence.
