The Unified Knot II, 2025
Description :
A Unified Knot II brings together two culturally gendered forms: the bow tie, conventionally associated with masculine dress, and the long braid, often associated with femininity. Joined as one continuous form, the two symbols no longer operate as opposites but become physically and visually dependent on one another.
The drawing extends the idea of the sculptural version while allowing the natural grain of the plywood to remain visible. The graphite braid interacts with the wood rather than occupying a neutral background, bringing material, body, and identity into the same surface. The knot becomes a point of connection where familiar gender codes are intertwined, suggesting identity not as a fixed binary but as something formed through coexistence, overlap, and interdependence.
