Checkmate continues the journey begun with The Pawn, where the staircase represented the difficulty of entering and moving through an unfamiliar system. Here, the pawn has transformed into the king, shifting not only its position but its relationship to the structure around it. The narrowing staircase suggests that advancement does not necessarily mean greater freedom; as one rises, the space for movement can become increasingly restricted. The work considers transformation, ambition, hierarchy, and the changing conditions of power, questioning whether reaching a new position is an arrival or simply the beginning of another set of constraints.
