Brainwash, 2023

Description :

Brain-wash transforms a familiar washbasin into a metaphor for how thoughts, beliefs, and identities are continuously shaped and erased. In place of an ordinary drain, a brass brain sits at the basin’s lowest point, suggesting that ideas, information, and external influences are constantly flowing through the mind. The functional language of washing becomes psychological: what does it mean to “clean” the mind, and who determines what should remain or disappear? The work plays with the familiar term “brainwashing” while questioning the influence of social expectations, media, culture, education, and systems of authority on individual thought. By positioning the brain where waste normally exits, Brain-wash uses humor and discomfort to ask whether our thoughts are genuinely our own or the accumulated residue of what we repeatedly absorb.
