Self Portrait 3.0, 2021 (Edition 2 of 2)

Description :

Self Portrait 3.0 reflects my initial experience of moving to the United States and confronting the distance between expectation and reality. I combined the form of a human head with the rounded shape of a pregnant belly, using pregnancy as a metaphor for anticipation, uncertainty, and the emergence of an unfamiliar future. Arriving in a new country carried excitement and possibility, but it also exposed me to difficulties I had not anticipated. The contrasting surfaces of the sculpture embody this tension: the polished surface suggests the idealized future I had imagined, while the rough, weathered surface represents the complexities and challenges of lived experience. Divided yet held within a single form, the sculpture captures a transitional state in which optimism and anxiety, expectation and reality, coexist as a new identity gradually begins to take shape.
