Contemporary Charmer I, 2022
Description :
The Contemporary Charmer I transforms the familiar necktie, a symbol of professionalism, authority, and institutional credibility, into the body of a cobra. Emerging from my experiences navigating immigration and legal systems in the United States, the drawing examines the complicated relationship between vulnerability and those entrusted with professional power. Graphite is particularly important to this version of the work. Its monochromatic restraint allows the necktie and cobra to merge almost imperceptibly, so that an object associated with respectability gradually reveals the possibility of threat. Rather than portraying a particular individual, the work addresses a broader imbalance of power: when someone depends on specialized knowledge they do not possess, trust can become both necessary and dangerous. The seductive precision of the drawing reinforces this contradiction, presenting authority as something polished and convincing on the surface while leaving its intentions uncertain.
