Self Portrait 3.0, 2020 (Edition 1 of 2)
Description :
Self Portrait 3.0 reflects my psychological state when I first arrived in the United States, suspended between anticipation and uncertainty. The sculpture merges the form of a human head with the swollen contour of a pregnant belly. Pregnancy becomes a metaphor for entering an unfamiliar future: carrying expectations for something not yet formed while remaining uncertain about what that future will demand.
The work emerged from the simultaneous excitement and anxiety I experienced while adapting to a new country, culture, and environment. The head suggests thought, calculation, and self-awareness, while the pregnant form evokes expectation, vulnerability, and the possibility of transformation. The contrasting rough and polished surfaces extend this tension materially, shifting between friction and possibility, discomfort and optimism. Rather than presenting a conventional likeness, Self Portrait 3.0 portrays identity as something still under construction, shaped by the uncertainty of what is yet to come.
